Spinal Surgery
Spinal problems in pets can be sudden, frightening, and painful — but with the right diagnosis and treatment, many pets can recover their mobility and quality of life. At Belconnen Veterinary Centre, we offer expert care for spinal conditions, including Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), slipped discs, spinal fractures, and more.
When Is Spinal Surgery Needed?
Not all spinal conditions require surgery — some cases can be managed with strict rest, medication, and physiotherapy. However, when neurological function is deteriorating or pain is severe, surgical decompression is often the best option.
We may recommend spinal surgery for:
Severe or rapidly progressing IVDD
Herniated/slipped discs
Spinal fractures or trauma
Tumours pressing on the spinal cord
Congenital malformations
IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease)
-
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common spinal condition in dogs, particularly in breeds like Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, and Corgis. It occurs when the cushioning discs between the vertebrae degenerate, rupture, or slip — putting pressure on the spinal cord.

Unable to urinate or defecate
Advanced Imaging & Diagnosis
Prompt and accurate diagnosis is key. We use CT or MRi to identify the exact location and severity of spinal compression, which helps us determine whether surgery is necessary — and plan it precisely.
