Desexing

At Belconnen Veterinary Centre, we provide professional desexing (spaying and neutering) services for pets of all shapes and sizes. Desexing not only helps prevent unwanted litters — it also offers long-term health and behavioural benefits for your pet.

Why Should I Desex my Pet?

    • Reduces risk of uterine infections and mammary cancer in females

    • Prevents testicular cancer and prostate disease in males

    • Helps manage hormone-driven behaviours (spraying, roaming, aggression)

    • Decreases roaming and escape behaviour

    • Reduces mounting and marking

    • Calms hormone-related anxiety or aggression Description text goes here

    • Prevents unexpected or accidental pregnancies

    • Helps reduce overpopulation and shelter intake

When Should I Desex my Pet?

The ideal timing depends on your pet’s species, breed, and health:

  • Typically between 5–12 months old (may vary based on breed and size)

  • Around 4–6 months old, before their first heat cycle

We offer tailored advice based on the latest veterinary evidence and your pet’s individual needs.

At Belconnen Veterinary Centre, we also offer laparoscopic (minimally invasive) spaying — a modern, lower-pain alternative to traditional surgery. Ask our team whether this option is right for your pet.
