Caesarean
At Belconnen Veterinary Centre, we understand how exciting — and sometimes stressful — the arrival of new puppies or kittens can be. If your pet is having difficulty delivering naturally or is a breed known for complicated births, a Caesarean (C-section) may be the safest option for both the mother and her babies.
We offer both emergency and planned caesarean surgeries, backed by a skilled surgical team, full anaesthetic monitoring, and neonatal support.
When Is a Caesarean Needed?
C-sections are typically recommended when:
Labour is prolonged or stalled (dystocia)
A puppy or kitten is stuck in the birth canal
The mother shows signs of distress or exhaustion
There are known complications from previous deliveries
The litter is very large or small
Your vet has recommended a scheduled caesarean based on breed or prior history
Brachycephalic breeds (such as French Bulldogs, Pugs, and British Bulldogs) often require planned caesareans due to their anatomy.
Emergency C-Section Services
We prioritise emergency cases and have protocols in place to deliver prompt care if your pet goes into labour outside normal hours.
If you’re concerned during labour or unsure if your pet is progressing normally, call us straight away — timing can be critical.
