Arthrodesis

When pets suffer from severe trauma, advanced arthritis, joint instability, or bone cancer, limb amputation isn’t always the only option. At Belconnen Veterinary Centre, we offer advanced surgical solutions such as arthrodesis and limb-sparing procedures — designed to preserve function, relieve pain, and maintain quality of life wherever possible.

What Is Arthrodesis?

Arthrodesis is the surgical fusion of a joint, most commonly used when a joint is severely damaged and cannot be repaired. This procedure eliminates pain by removing the joint surfaces and fusing the bones together.

Common Indications:

  • Severe osteoarthritis unresponsive to medication

  • Fractures that cannot be stabilised by other means

  • Joint luxation (dislocation) or instability

  • Infection or immune-mediated disease affecting the joint

  • Ligament injuries in the lower limb that result in chronic joint instability

Joints Commonly Fused:

  • Carpus (wrist) – including pan-carpal arthrodesis

  • Tarsus (ankle/hock) – including pan-tarsal arthrodesis

  • Elbow

  • Occasionally, the stifle (knee)

Benefits:

  • Permanent pain relief in a damaged joint

  • Preservation of the limb

  • Return to comfortable function for most pets

  • Strong, stable result using bone plates, pins, or external fixators
